Family Staycation Ideas for Local Summer Fun

Multi-generational family relaxes by the water and collects rocks - just one of many family staycation ideas for summer fun.

As a leading Twin Cities realty team, clients turn to the Jarrod Peterson Real Estate Group for insight on local activities, events, and more on a daily basis. One of the most popular questions we receive in the summer is “what are some fun family staycation ideas?” In this blog, we outline some of our favorites and provide resources to help you and your family make the most out of Minnesota summers. Read on to learn more.

Summer Staycation Ideas for the Whole Family

As an adult, staycations provide an excellent opportunity to relax, catch up on summer reading, and finish household projects. However, we all know that children need a little more adventure, excitement, and exploration to burn off the extra energy. Here are some ideas that our clients love to use as fun for the whole family:

  1. Hit the water. Swimming and boating are some of the best ways to enjoy and stay cool on a hot, sunny summer day. And lucky for us, Minnesota is full of lakes and beaches. If you don’t have the opportunity to get out to the lake or would prefer something more private, consider purchasing a small inflatable pool or other water toy for the kids to cool off with at home.
  2. Go fishing. A traditional Minnesota pastime, fishing is another terrific way to enjoy our state’s 10,000+ lakes – especially during summer. It’s a fun way to get outside, spend time and bond with the family, and it’s relatively inexpensive. Even for a young first-timer, retailers such as Target offer kids’ fishing kits for as little as $19.99.
  3. Take a hike. Hiking provides exercise while letting you enjoy and get closer to nature, and we have incredible trails all over the state. Take an extended trip up north and explore the beautiful views along the Gunflint Trail or Superior Hiking Trail. For day trips or other activities around the metro, the Three Rivers Park District offers over 27,000 acres to explore nature centers, golf academies, archery academies, summer camps, canoeing and kayaking trips, and other opportunities for adventurers of all ages.
  4. Embrace your inner artist. Visit local arts and craft shows, festivals, and events and spend the day being creative with the whole family. With all the opportunities available, you can have fun and mix up the themes – one outing can focus on making jewelry, the next on nature painting or family portraits, and so on. It all depends on what sounds best to you and your family!

Additional Information for Planning Summer Fun

In addition to these, Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine provides excellent ideas for summer fun, day trips, and children-focused exploration. They just released their 100 Things Every Kid Must Do issue and if you’re not a subscriber ($19.95/year or $30.95 for two years), they cite the Explore Minnesota website as a great resource for finding festivals, museums, camping, day trip ideas, and more.

Their top suggestion for what kids must do this summer? Visit the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge. Thousands of memories are made at the 115-year-old bridge each year.

Trip Advisor is another website that ranks top destinations and activities in areas all over the world.  From restaurants and hotels to day trips and things to do, you can find rankings and reviews for thousands of events and locations.
